Installing Vinyl Flooring is Something That You Can Do All by Yourself
While there are several types of flooring that it may not be recommended that you do all by
yourself, installing vinyl flooring is not one of them. The tiles themselves are very inexpensive and even if
you do make a mistake, the cost of replacing them is not that significant. This is a great opportunity to start
to get brownie points with the wife and learn how to do some home projects.
One of the most important things to do when you are installing vinyl flooring is to make
sure that the area is prepped correctly. Because of the nature of vinyl flooring, it can pretty much be laid
down over top of anything. The common mistake for the first time tile layer is to just drop the floor right down
on top of the existing surface. You could not make a bigger error in judgment if you do this.
The reason is that unless the surface is totally clean and free of debris, the adhesive may
not stick properly. You are also going to have to make sure that the floor itself is totally level. This can be a particular problem if you are putting tile down over top of concrete as it may have a very rough
surface. You are going to have two options as this point: Get out some sanders and even out the floor or put
down a floating sub floor to put the tile on.
For some, the thought of doing either of these is a little much and that gives them their
excuse to hire a professional, but putting down a floating floor is not that hard and should only add a few hours to the task. That is not that much compared
to the cost that would be added by using a private contractor.
If you have never put a floor down before, you are best served to watch a couple of videos
that will explain the process of installing vinyl flooring. There is nothing like a visual aid to help you
understand exactly how this is done. For the most part, you can do an entire room in less than half a
day.
If you wake up early enough on a Sunday to get this done, the wife might just be happy
enough to leave you and the boys alone when the game kicks off at 4:00pm. It is a small price to pay for peace
and quiet during a football game.
